Do(n't) Judge a Book by Its Cover

Don't judge a book by its cover.

You must be so friendly with the sentence above. Yup. Almost all people are standing with the sentence.

Before going further to my idea I'd like to share today, I think it's important for me to tell that I am inspired writing this after watching a comedy TV show in Trans 7, one of Indonesian TV channel. One of the cast said the sentences which brought me suddenly think that some people lead their idea wrongly toward the sentence.

If you were in an airport then you saw a man walking around naked, what would be in your mind? I bet you're gonna think the man was crazy! Unless the man suddenly came to you and said: "Don't judge a book by its cover. Just because I am not wearing piece of clothes doesn't mean I am crazy". But after the man went away, I believe you will just keep thinking that the man was insane, or even psycho.

For seeing the phenomenon these days, I dare to say that some people would make a justification to their appearance which is actually break an absolute rule: covering their 'aurat'. Some people will easily make a rejection to Allah's rule by stating: "Please don't judge people by their appearance blah blah blah". Or they will utter kind of this reason: "There's no guarantee that a woman who is wearing hijab is better than the one who's not". Yes, of course there's no guarantee.

But one thing for sure, Allah has guaranteed in The Holy Qur'an that by covering the aurat, it means women are protecting themselves, as stated in Qur'an, An Nuur verse 31:

"And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed."

I bold the first line to make you aware that the rule to cover your aurat well is ONLY and SPECIALLY to the believing women. Make the conclusion yourself ;)

So, should we judge the book by its cover? We shouldn't, if only you define 'the cover' not as the parts you shouldn't show. I believe, smart people will define 'the cover' here as something like rich or poor, beautiful or handsome, simple or complicated appearance, and kinda adjective like that.

Well, then. Don't judge a book by its cover. But I love colorful cover book more :D

  1. I agreed with you for this, covering "aurat" is also valid for both man and woman wherever they are and this must be coming from the bottom of their hear to obey Allah's guidance and rules. Judging people by the cover is not a good choice, and something I will not do in anyway whatsoever

    1. yes, for both man and woman of course.
But usually kind of justification of the words: "don't judge a book by its cover" comes from woman who is still not keen on covering their aurat :)

  11. neither book nor its cover relevant with this issue, I think.

eventhough cover designed to sell the book. also woman with the white heart not always obvious by how she dress, she uses all of things outside, or present herself on her "face".

But it is talking about hijab, “the cloth of soul”, "syar’i", a thing as a way of life exactly. "Grundnorm!" the Dutch said, which it is integral part of moslem women. Not just as a dress, but as a soul, absolutely.

    1. Exactly! If only the woman understands that to cover his aurat is a symbol of obeying Allah and making it as her soul, she won't even think twice to do :)
